On Saturday, October 24, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Windward Oahu and the Rotary Club of Kaneohe replaced the rotting planter boxes at Windward Senior Day Care Center and planted them fresh.
On Saturday morning, October 24, 2026, a team of Rotarians rolled up their sleeves at Windward Senior Day Care Center (WSDC) in Kailua to replace the center's worn-out planter boxes and plant them again.
The original planters were built by Rotary about eight years ago. When Torri Kon, CEO of Windward Senior Day Care Center, let our club know they had been damaged, we came out to look. Wood rot had set in, so we decided to replace them.
From 8 to 10 a.m., seven Rotarians, joined by Spencer Schmidt, Molly's son and a sophomore at Le Jardin Academy, tore out the old boards, assembled the new planters, refilled them with the soil saved from the old boxes, and set in the plants. Sarah Herrmann led the Rotary service coordination. Torri provided a wonderful breakfast, opened the area for the work, and was hands-on for several of the tasks.
Rotary donations covered about $300 for the new planters, and reusing the original soil kept costs down.
Mahalo to Torri and the WSDC staff for letting us continue serving the Senior Center, and to everyone who came out to help.
